Songs From The Past Which Are So Relevant Now
Lyrics from the past that express the very state of this world today
Music is a powerful tool, it can bring joy, make you dance, help you meditate, heal, influence and also express stories of love, politics, hardship & hope.
In this article, we are going to explore 5 different songs that express the artists’ world views and how after analyzing the lyrics, one can find that they are very relevant today.
Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai, released 1996
This song tells a story where all lives will live in a virtual insanity.
Future’s made of virtual insanity now
Always seem to, be governed by this love we have
For useless, twisting, our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound - for we all live underground
Although technology is very useful, such as for research, work purposes & staying in touch with others (especially in these unprecedented times), there are many who are addicted to technological devices. Many people around the world are losing touch with being social in real life yet live their social lives through screens by the use of social media.
If you grew up in the 90’s, you would definitely relate to the vast difference in technology & its impact on the world.
Changes by Tupac Shakur, released 1998
Life is a cycle, it has many events that repeat and sadly racism is one that history hasn’t erased. The world witnessed the racist, brutal murder of George Floyd in 2020 and there were many countries who did protests to stand against it. There have also been many other racist killings before & after. Yet as 2Pac said;
I see no changes, all I see is racist faces
Misplaced hate makes disgrace to races
We under, I wonder what it takes to make this
One better place, let’s erase the wasted
Still I read stories of racism, people of different cultures who have experienced terrible racism for example some Chinese people being discriminated against & blamed for Covid 19. Then there are people who are mistreated for being a different skin colour or culture. They feel they live in a world that isn’t theirs, feeling alone, isolated and in pain.
I’ve also read ignorant responses to the very experiences of these individuals which sadly highlights the utter ignorance some or even many have. It must change yet I share the thoughts of 2Pac, I see no changes, who knows, it may never be eliminated in our lifetime or even the next...
They Don’t Care About Us by Michael Jackson released 1995
People around the world are expressing that their fundamental human rights are being violated. There are protests, blogs and videos displaying this very thought from numerous people.
While speaking to people from different parts of the world, I often hear a common complaint such as, “Our rights are being taken away month by month!”
They feel they are not really cared for.
In some countries, people are tracked through technology and aren’t allowed to even hire private transport without this technology indicating that they are healthy. In other countries, people are fined up to 500 Euros if their business is a minute over the government curfew and people are fined up to 200 Euros if their mask is not on correctly.
Students have complained that they still have to pay the same university funds even though they aren’t receiving the same method of education. Some complain that they’re ‘isolated to small university hall rooms’ and their lectures are ‘boring’ and not what they expected.
There are children whose education & social aspects of life are affected due to not being able to leave their homes at all. People have been unable to attend funerals and weddings have been cancelled.
Although many may say these measures are necessary, there are people desperately yearning for a return of their rights, with some labelled as indefinitely taken away. These voices are often labelled as ‘bad’, ‘selfish’ and are ignored by authorities. They feel they are not really cared for.
Tell me what has become of my rights
Am I invisible 'cause you ignore me?
Your proclamation promised me free liberty, now
I’m tired of bein' the victim of shame
They’re throwin' me in a class with a bad name
I can’t believe this is the land from which I came
Propaganda by Dead Prez, released 2000
21 years later this track is still relevant. There are many lies out there surfacing their manipulative words to the world.
Lies that are told as truths, any alternative research or view is seen as a conspiracy theory and quickly taken down, the speakers (scientists, medical professionals, everyday people) are scrutinized and stamped out.
For example, in the UK, a Coronavirus Act 2020 legislation was passed, hugely based on falsified evidence from the Secretary of State for Health, Matt Hancock, England. He was taken to the High court and his actions have been labelled as ‘unlawful’. There have been calls to action from people in the UK & videos circulating with concern and outrage at the cover up of billions exchanged for secret contracts, science hidden, threat to suspend Doctors’ pensions because of these actions.
You can read about it here.
For one to find the truth they need to undo programming, unlearn the lies and research deeper.
You can’t fool all the people all of the time
But if you fool the right ones, then the rest will fall behind
Tell me who’s got control of your mind? your world view?
Is it the news or the movie you’re taking your girl to?
Point of no return by Immortal Technique, released in 2003
And now you got yourself a virus, stuck in the Matrix…
This is the age of microchips and titanium
The dark side of the moon and contact with aliensComputerized humanity living inside of a clone
This is the place where the unknown is living and real
Wormword the planet X and the seventh seal
Universal truth is not measured in mass appeal
Immortal Technique is known by true underground Hip Hop fans to rap about things that the US government wouldn’t want spoken about. His lyrics are quite graphic and explore his view of the world we’re living in.
His lyrics in this song are relevant due to being stuck in a virus, humans fighting with opinions on the virus and its case for immunization. It also highlights a life where humans are ‘computerized’ (like Jamiroquai’s song) which depicts that many are under the watch and control of AI technology and are addicted to technology.
What songs can you think of that are relevant to the world today?
Thanks for reading!
