Music is a super powerful tool, it’s the very reason why TV commercials have music in them, why shops/supermarkets/movies/series use it. It influences your brain in many ways.

When particles vibrate at 423 Hz there is order and geometry. When they vibrate at 440 Hz however, there is confusion and lack of structure. — Tanaaz

According to scientists the frequency of love in music is 528 Hz. Did you know this is the same energy that the earth vibrates at?

This high frequency can do wonders! Lower frequencies which unfortunately are used in many adverts/films etc. use a lower frequency of 440 Hz. This frequency was adopted during the Nazi regime to provoke fear & control. Ironically this frequency was set as a standard in the US in 1940.

However there are frequencies that are lower that promote good wellbeing such as 432 Hz which studies have discovered can promote happiness and more…

Let’s explore the impact of music!

Benefits of listening to the right frequency of music:

  • It can evoke memories
  • It can ease seizures
  • It can make you stronger
  • It can be used to assist with repairing brain damage
  • It increases your communication skills
  • It can enhance how your frontal lobe functions (the part of your brain for decision making, planning & thinking)
  • It can help new neurons to be formed in the Hippocampus (central part of the brain used for retrieving memories, emotional reactions & how we function in general)

Music experiments

In 1994 a research scientist Masaru Emoto conducted a series of experiments on the affect of words on water. In one particular experiment he used music and froze the water to view its crystallisation under a microscope.

He played a variety of music from Heavy Metal, Classical & Blues. Here are the results on the crystallisation:

His discovery showed that the water which had peaceful music played to it crystallised in beautiful patterns, whereas, music with words that were negative formed unattractive patterns.

What can we learn from this?

We are made up of approximately 75% of water, the very music we listen to has either a positive or negative impact on us.

Can’t get a song out of your head?

Music will do this to you. That annoying jingle from a TV advert, that song your friend plays that you can’t stand? If you really dislike it, why is that tune going around your head and perhaps slipping out of your mouth?

In 2005, a study group from Dartmouth researched music and memory & discovered that the brain’s auditory cortex keeps the musical memories. This means that if you hear a song enough regardless of how you felt, your brain will hold that memory.

Language development through music

For all language lovers, if you are planning on learning a language it’s very beneficial to listen to songs in that particular language. It will help you retain that information and take it from your short-term to your long-term memory.

When our brain remembers things, our musical memory becomes a route to guide us to the information in this instance to the vocabulary/lyrics.

Experiment test for you:

Choose a song in the language you want/are learning. Listen to it a few times without distraction. On the third attempt try to sing along, you may find you remember words from the chorus more because these words are repeated.

Then look it up on this website Lyrics Training:

https://lyricstraining.com

It’s fantastic for helping you to learn new vocabulary and see how it’s written down. It’s an enjoyable way to practice the foreign language you’re learning. This site was introduced by a fabulous teacher Jesús from SpanishVIP. ¡Gracias Jesús!

Once you’ve played around with the site, aim not to listen to the song for a while and come back to it to see how much you remember. You may be amazed how many lyrics your brain has retained.

Music for healing

As mentioned above, music can make you strong, it can enhance your frontal lobe, ease seizures & assist to repair brain damage.

This is why when people meditate with music, they choose calm music to relax their body, create a tranquil atmosphere and heal the mind.

The use of the sound ‘Om’ has a frequency which vibrates your body, healing you from within this is why it’s often recited during meditations in practices such as Hinduism & Buddhism.

Your Take Away

Music is a powerful tool to heal, to enhance your memory, to develop your language learning skills and affects your body.

Which genre of music do you listen to? How is this impacting your mind & life? Let me know in the comments.
